I believe that grnd wire is just to assure that the resistor is gounded. the gen fld was grounded thru the light switch box via the steering post but due to rust this failed to do the job. On maintanence charg(first position on switch) the current went thru the resistor. Then on full charge the field was fully grounded by bypassing the resistor. Make sure you clean the area where the switch box is attached to the steering post and it should charge like it is supposed to.
