Early 686's had the d-312 which was a smaller version of the 414-436-466. The later 686 had the german engine.

656-666-686 are basically the same tractor frame except that the rear end of the 686 was stregthened internally. Yes M wheels will fit on the hubs.

You can think of a 656 or 686 as a more The comftorable M, but is more capable also.

I pull a 3-16 rollover with my 686 where as my dad's m would pull a 2-16 draw plow.

686 is a great tractor
