'40 H engine or not???

I've got an H that I've checked the serial number on and know it is a 1940 model. The engine is what has me stumped -- it has a distributor that sits vertical in the block about 1/2 way back on the right side.

I was just looking at my serviceman's guide and it shows these tractors having a horizontally mounted magneto on the timing cover. Were all of the engines built the same way so they could be equipped with either system?
