Farmall Super C charging problems

I just put a new voltage regulator on my super c (6 V pos ground).Now it will show a charge,but only intermittently.Is this normal,or should it charge continuously?
Original problem was that it was discharging continuously.Had a brand new battery dead in less than a month .Tractor would also not stay running..is this normal when battery is real low?
Also,how many volts should show on amnmeter when charging correctly?Is it constant or does it vary?How do i check the generator?
I know I'm asking alot,but any help is greatly appreciated.Thanks.
