If the engine has been worked on (ie valve job) then the
valve clearances may be a problem. I rebuilt an engine
once and forgot to re-adjust the valves afterwards. The
result was an engine that ran great cold but barely ran at all
once it warmed up. It also made lots of gassy oil. An oil
change after the valve adjustment solved my problem, but
not until I had done everything else imaginable to the
ignition system, fuel system, etc... Clearances are easy to
check, so it might just be worth a few minutes of your time
to try it.
