Bob, I have a theory on that, mind you it is just a theory, but,here goes, I think that those notches were cut into the hood to give access to the mounting bolts for the exhaust pipe on the old distillate manifolds, why they didn't just remove the hood first is a mystery. I have an M and 2 Hs that have had this same hood treatment, all of them were originally distillate or kerosene burners.
