I don't know why you couldn't make a new rod. might have to be 3/8 rod so it is not springy, route it up then bend to the right and come up on the right side of the seat. make it long enough so he don't have to reach over so far. The bend would be above the PTO sheild so it should work. Move the guide and drill it out for the larger rod. 3/8 rod can be bent cold. I use well rod or electric fence posts.
