The guys who say 986 has a D-436 are right. I think that most of the confusion about this comes from the fact that the 1086 with it's DT-414 engine has fewer cubic inches than the smaller 986! Of course, the 1086 has a turbo, so it has more horsepower. I have always found it strange that IH didn't just give the 1086 a DT-436. 986 is a very reliable tractor with all of the comforts, and has quite a few improvements over the old 06 series, but I bet you can buy the 1206 cheaper, and you'll be getting a simple, reliable workhorse. It's really up to you.
