I recently "adopted" my late father's 460 gas tractor and am again familiarizing myself with it after 25 years or so of not being around it. I would not characterize the 460 as being gutless, nor would I label it a gas hog. Perhaps the fuel hungry and gutless perception of the 460 is due to pulling over-matched implements with it such as a disk. As a matter of fact, looking at the Nebraska Tractor Test data, the 460 gas is in the top 10% in the economy ratings. Quite the contrary, doing normal chores with the old girl has shown that it is rather thrifty with respect to fuel usage in my opinion. I am also quite surprised at how nimble it is maneuvering it in tight areas with its nice power steering and row crop lay out despite the rather longish chassis. My father did tell me at one time that there was a "weak" rear-end problem with the 460, and that it had been corrected in later versions. As far as I know, my 460 is the original rear end design, and we have not had problems with it. Glorified H? Hardly.
