Sounds like you might have a check valve setup. It prevents oil from leaving the rod end of cylinder until an equal or greater amount enters the base end. That keeps cylinder from cavitating when extending with a load on. Usually they are marked V-1 V-2 and C-1 C-2 on the ports. V= Valve C= Cylinder. You may have bad o-rings on the fittings. Comment based on what you described. Good Luck
