PTO is the splined shaft at the rear of the tractor for powering drawn machines.
In the old days this shaft was gear driven off the transmision and worked with the same clutch. What we call "live PTO" is a system that uses a seperate clutch that enables the tractor forward motion to be stoped while the PTO continues to operate. The same principals apply to tractor hydralic systems too.
