Good point about steering those reversed units! We've got a rough terrain forklift built on a reversed Allis D-15(?) utility. It's a handful to steer when traveling forward faster than 5 or 6 mph. For safety reasons it's highest forward gears are locked out. However it'll run close to 20 mph and steers fine in reverse (tractor "forward"). Consequently it's driven backward between jobsites. A pain in the neck (literally!) for the driver, but a lot faster than crawling several miles going forward.

I submit for an H or M similarly modified to run safely in reverse, good practice would be to insert the 5th gear lockout bolt in the tranny to limit the forward speed to 4th gear max.
