How warm of a day was it last time you started the tractor? How long did you run it? Did you get it up to operating temp? How many hours are on it? We had a 1979 686 with the D-310 German diesel, which is the 6-cylinder version of your D-206. It was very cold-blooded. On a 50 degree day, it would miss and smoke until it was warmed up and had been worked. About 1980, IH increased the compression of the German diesels from 15:1 to 16:1. Made them ten times the engine. We have a 786 and a 3088 with D-358 German diesels and 16:1 pistons, and you wouldn't even think they had almost the same engine as the 686. My advice to you is to get it good and warm, and see what happens. If nothing changes, ajust the valve lash and see what happens. If you still have problems then, it's probably time to let a Case-IH dealership look at it. Try to find the serial number, if it is older than 1980, consider overhauling the engine with the 16:1 pistons. A cloud of smoke is normal for the German diesels.
