Don: That is precicely what I do always run the ground strap to a casting. That old sheet metal just isn't good enough ground. I also go for soldered on ends on my cables and 1 gauge wire. When cables start looking a bit on crappy side after 10 years or so I turf them. Many many good batteries have been wasted because of poor cables. I had lot of starter troubles with a 6.2 Chevy diesel. I went through one a year when truck was new. I moved the batteries side by side and wired it up with 1 gauge same type system as used on highway tractors. The last starter went 6-7 years. Poor power supply very hard on starters. On a 100 hp John Deere, around Christmas was a bit sluggish starting, 12 year old machine, batteries 6 years old. I replaced all cables with heavier than original. Got two more years from batteries, and that machine was being started every day in sub 0 weather with out block heater.
