Lou - You're right - 9+ volts is too high for a 6 volt system. Problem is most likely your regulator - though it could also be a ground in the wiring between the regulator and generator "F" terminals. Try pulling the wire off the F terminal at the regulator with the motor running at governed RPM. If the voltage drops off the problem's gotta be the regulator. You can continue to run it like it is - it won't hurt the regulator. However the higher voltage will overcharge and shorten the life of the battery if you run it very long. Also you have the risk of overheating and ruining the generator. Note - If the regulator is doing it's job it will automatically the generator output 7.0 - 7.5 volts.
