Flat belts were the only drive used on very old equipment, even steam tractors had to line up very carefully on heavy loads such as threshing machines that would sometimes slug, from what I gather working around a farm equipment dealer since 1960 the older fellows would always say that JD were more critical to align because of the power was not as smooth.
