282 rebuild problem

got my engine running finally but it will only run with glow plugs on and its 93 today. also when i go above 1/8 throttle it loads up sputters and backfires timing is dead on playing with timing does not help. i bought a remfg head cause mine was cracked, was told if valves are to far recessed this is my problem, heads that have been redone many times causes the valve to be moore recessed and thus you have less compression, any thougts on this? i need help, you guys got me finally starting now came i finish this !@#$%^& project?? help
