There is a very small mark on the flywheel that you line up with the raised mark on the cast plate behind the oil pan. Hard to find but it is there. The mark may or may not have "DC I4" on either side. A timing light is not necessary. Line up the marks with # 1 at TDC, rotate the distributer about 30 degrees counterclockwise viewed from the rear, remove the coil wire from the distributer cap, turn on the switch and rotate the dist clockwise until you get a spark between the coil wire and the primary terminal on the dist. Doublecheck by hooking the coil wire under the dist cap clip so that the tip is a fraction of an inch from the primary terminal, crank the engine one rev with the hand crank until you get a spark. Check the timing mark, it should line up, or be very slightly past the mark on the cast piece (NEVER before).
