You may want to try jacking up one side until the rear tire is off of the ground. This should also relieve the gear train pressure. If you are on a slope either headed up hill or down, be sure to block the remaining tires to prevent rolling off of the jack. If you are on a slope, this would also explain the gear train pressure.
