Yeah, I would try cleaning everything up and maybe putting a booster charge on the 6 volt battery before I would spend $100 converting to a 12 volt system. The 6 volt system should work fine if everything is like it's supposed to be. Your starter may be dragging and need cleaning. Check out an operator's manual. And it's OK to jump it with 12 volts, just don't leave the jumper cables hooked up too long.
