the pto clutch can bind and make the engine turn over hard too. fairly easy to adjust. can use "seasonal disconnect" to disconnect pto from engine for diagnosis. jumping on 12v won't hurt it. most important thing is to have all battery connections clean on both ends of the cables. ground point on those tractors is in the seat/battery box. very poor spot in my opinion. could run a cable from the ground to one of the starter bolts. maybe your starter needs some attention. if you've never had it checked, would be a good idea, then you will know when the last time wear parts were replaced. good luck karl
