Farmall 400 Alternator

Thanks for your responses to my silly prior question.
Now I have a real one. On the tractor, being an LP it is a little difficult to get started. The former owner was using one 12V battery (it's been converted) but he said that it starts right up when pulled with his truck. Don't say it. When I went there the first time he already had it going and this guy being a neighbor he probably won't lie because I WILL pester him. But he said that the previous owner (also a neighbor) had two batteries in parallel and he didn't have any trouble. That being one question, my original is: when the tractor is running and he disconnects the battery it dies. At the generator/alternator there is a loose wire coming from the rear of it that goes toward the coil. There is an empty lug on a connection at the coil. Before I just went poking wires into things I wanted some opinions. Do you think or how can I find out, not having a manual yet, whether that broken connection is my problem. Sorry for being so long winded. Thanks again in advance for your help.
