An ignition switch that has a bad connection ( corrosion, etc) will heat up and can cause a fire or heat damage. The or corroded connection will have resistance which will cause it to get hot or could be arcing accross the bad connection. This heat will travel thru the ignition switch terminal and into the connecting wires, melting insulation and possibly causing a fire and additional shorts as the insulation on the wires melts.

Everyone that welds knows that electrical arcs are hot. And resistance is what causes electric heaters to radiate heat.
