Bus Driver hit it on the head: Only a short circuit current overload could cause the damage like you found. In the (unlikely) event the short was in the regulator, the wire running between the ignition switch and the regulator will show evidence of heat damage along it's entire length. Check the wiring near the regulator - if it's OK, the problem has to be something else.

More likely something shorted (cut through) energized wiring near the ignition switch, or contacted a terminal on the switch itself. Or possibly a short developed in the switch itself.
