Alternator problems

The alternator on my tractor is not working. The dash warning lite is off all the time,switch on or off. I took it off and had it tested and tested OK. Put it back on and worked one time. Then the same problem. This all started when the battery was dead, it`s possible the switch was left on. Any ideas would, as usual be greatly appreciated.
