Live pto is when you can just pull the pto lever and it has its own internal clutch for engaging. It also means that you can step the clutch and your pto will keep spinning. If you try engaging the pto without stepping the clutch and you hear gears grinding then you do not have live pto. Some of the late 1950's Cases had semi-live pto. You had to step the clutch to engage the pto but then you had a seperate hand clutch that you could use to stop forward movement of the tractor but the pto kept running.
