I recently went through the same thing trying to get a good fit on an H, had an even worse gap between the hood and tank, this was a hood that I picked up at a swap meet, because it looked to be straighter than the one I had, appearances can be decieving, I spent several hours tweaking on that hood, my knee against the center of the hood, pulling up on the sides with my hands. I even broke loose the spot welds that hold the bracing underneath the hood so that I could reshape the entire hood, and then had to reshape the braces to fit the hood, and weld those back in place. It is still a long way from perfect, but until I can find an already perfect hood, it will just have to do.
