Tom: A 1977 140 wiuld be 12 volt with an alternator from factory, right or wrong? Could be in your points, condencer, etc. but I doubt it. My hunch is carb. Having said that I suspect that carb may different than most of what we discuss on here. Does the carb have a solinoid valve on it? Stale gas is what I suspect. For example I had the screen in sediment bowl, seal 99% off, after setting all winter. What was in that screen was just like shelac or varnish. You can get similar deposits in carb. I now make a practice of starting my tractor once per month and let it run for an hour. The other thing I do between those winter starts is turn gas off at sediment bowl and let tractor burn all gas out of carb. Then all you need do is check the screen in bowl, then let the gas in. the carb stays clean and free of these deposits. Since I have started this I have no more problems. I would check this first.
