Jonathan: When you refer to book which book are you using? I have an IT manual and yes I agree it is quite vague also. It shows shims at hub of the pulley it refers to as Y and the shims where gear box mounts it refers to X Here is all they say," Vary the number of shims (X and Y) so that heels of gears are in register and backlash is 0.004-0.006 "( IT recommended) My opinion quite lazy writing. Just where you measure this backlash I'm not quite sure. I trust you can see enough through the top plug to tell if the heel of those gears are in register.
