Someone on this board told me to set #1 piston at TDC, by aligning the mark on the crankshaft front pulley with the pointer--this is viewable from the left side of the engine looking past generator. With #1 at TDC, valves 1,2,3,5,7 and 9 can be adjusted to 0.027. Then, putting #6 at TDC, you can adjust 4, 6, 8 10 11 and 12. It took me a while to think it through, but to get #6 at TDC, simply requires a 360 degree rotation of the crank pulley from where it was located when #1 was at TDC. I had set the valves on my 560 D prior to learning this and so I went back and rechecked all of mine, adjusting them to with this approach. All worked out fine. I rechecked them with the engine at operating temperature and all is fine. I really appreciated the gentlemen giving me the help and am glad to pass the information on to you. Mine was a 560D, but expect your's is similar.
