The A JD would fit right inbetween the H and M Farmall. Probably closer to the M, but I believe a 1948 M would out pull a 1948 JD A. The H and M are relatively easy to work on. I don't anticipate that you would have any trouble based on your work record. The H and M are very simular as far as there style and the way they are built virtually different just in size. The M is larger in scale. They were a pretty solid tractor. Just like all the rest. Needed overhauled after so many hours. Some wear points to look for would probably be play in the steering, cogs on the throttle wore down, and so on. But hay, as old as they are getting, you are going to find some wear, as well as things just plain neglected. Should be able to find a good fixer upper H for $500 to $700 in my area (Midwest). One fairly fixed up for around $1000 to $1200. A couple or 300 more for an M.
