Rich: Believe me listen to KB. I found out the hard way 35 years ago with a 300 shifting from 3rd to 4th with no load but at full throttle. It broke teeth off 4 gears and bent one shaft. Even after fixing all of that the transmission always had a little tick in it. I realize 300 didn't have big gears like 400 but engine was less also. By now you will be into a bit more metal fatigue. All that is required is shape up the end of that shift lever.
