756 GAS wouldn't start

Drove the tractor up to the shed and when I tried to start a few minutes later all it would do was click at the solenoid--it has a new battery. I tried a number of times with the same results finally I shifted the gears to different positions and it started. What does that mean?? Also can this tractor be pulled to get it started and if so what gear should it be in. It is in direct drive with the TA and it has the high and low range for the side shifter.
