Rauville, I have a friend with a classic car who did the same thing BobM suggests; he used a switch as an emergency replacement for a dead cutout. His memory wasn't good, and the battery drained down. He jokingly says he should have used a switch that lit up when it was open. Except for that possible refinement of the cheap fix with a light as a reminder, I'd get a new cutout.
