It's hard to say what the switch is for without tracing the circut to be sure, but it may be used to keep the battery from discharging through the generator when the tractor is not running. This job would have been done by the cutout when new, a B wouldn't have had a regulator. On 55+ year old tractors, it's hard to say what may have been changed in all that time.
