Some folks claim that 12 volts through a 6 volt starter will kill the bendex more quickly. I have converted 2 tractors to 12 volt, a JD 430 and IH SMTA. I have had no trouble with the bendix on either. Both start very quickly. What goes out on the bendix? Could the flywheel ring be worn badly? On my SMTA I had trouble with the windings in the starter at first, just that the end broke off. I took it to a guy who rebuilds starters and he put 12 volt windings in it. Believe they were same as in a Chevy. Don't know if that has made a difference or not. Suspect you could get you 6 volt starter rebuilt to 12 volts unless you want to keep it for the correct police. My tractor's are workers so I don't worry about that.
