There's some piston/compression differences in the German Diesels. We have a 686 with a D-310 that is the hardest starting engine in the world. We also have a 786 with a D-358 that is the easiest starting engine I've ever been around. I've been told that early German Diesels have 15:1 compression, while late models have 16:1. You can put 16:1 pistons and sleeves into early engines. I would guess that 706, 756, 544, and 826 German Diesels with 15:1 compression would start better than a 686, as the early tractors had an excess fuel control for cold starting.
