Sorry I don't know much about the thermosiphons. My super c has a 180 thermostat and a water pump. I had to rig a modern type thermostat into it with a couple of copper spacers I cut from a piece of pipe and a big snap ring. I couldn't find an original thermostat anywhere. Do you know what temp it is at? I wouldn't think it should get over 180 sitting there idling. Mine won't even get over 160 till I work it mowing or something then it settles in right at 180.I got a stanley laser temp gage at the hardware store for under 50 dollars. I use it all the time for checking cooling systems and I can even find lean or rich cylinders with it just by putting the beam on the exh manifold and comparing them. It is pretty neat. A cheap candy thermometer at the grocery store works too though. The surging problem sounds like a governor spring. I think it is called a dampener spring but not sure. It's the one on top of the governor for mine. I think yours is about the same.I worked on so many tractors over the years and still can't name all these parts. It sounds to me like it is misadjusted. Do you have an I&T manual? It tells how to adjust it right.

When dealing with thinner metals like sheet tin, a long bolt and
