Shifter fork rails the Reverse idler gear ..........

Well, my reverse idler gear bushing must be just about totally gone (lots of howling type whines when backing up). Sure enough, upon taking the shift cover off, the reverse idler has WAY too much play on the shaft. Everything else looks good.

Question: I seem to recall someone talking about moving the shift fork rails back enough to get the reverse idler gear & shaft out. Then repairs can be made without splitting the tranny from the torque tube. Is this possible ?
