Oil cooler oddity

I have a 560D that sucked all the oil out of the crankcase and moved it to the radiator in less that 3 minutes. I suspected the oil cooler. (lots of reasons for suspecting, long story.)I disconnected the oil cooler lines to the radiator and pressurized them with compressed air. I pulled the dipstick and was greeted with a breeze blowing out of the crankcase. I got a different oil cooler and replaced the original one. I pressurized the replacement cooler and no air from the crankcase. Now for the really interesting thing, I put the air to the original cooler I removed, submerged the whole thing in a bucket of water and no air leak. Still scratching my head.
