If it has a generator, it is probably a 6 volt, alternator, 12. IH did not put an alternator on tractors in 1948 -- don't think they showed widespread use until the 60's. However, there are 12 volt generators and 6 volt alternators. But, if you have a generator you can be 99% sure it is 6 volt.
