I almost choke every time I see this topic come up because of all the misconceptions out there. I grew up with a SMTA, 450, 560, and a 656. We used the TA's in all of these tractors alot. Ran a IH 150 pto combine with the SMTA & a IH 402 with the 656 for 8 years on 2500 acres/year and was in TA for 4 to 5 days straight pushing rye through the machine. The point made below regarding the throw-out bearing needs to be considered but is not a huge concern or problem from my experience. Yes we had to repair a TA occasionally but the cost was minimal for the convenience and time savings plus the reduced wear on the engine clutch from reduced shifting.
