You have to let the engine run on gasoline long enough to warm sufficiently to run on diesel. If the engine is not warm enough, it will not switch to diesel even if you have fuel pressure. On my MD, the fuel pressure comes up immediately, but it won't run on diesel until it's run long enough to warm. In warm weather that may be only a minute or less. In cold weather maybe 4 or 5 minutes. Your description of what happens during the switch over is good. You forgot to mention that there are butterflys in the manifold to shut off air flow through the carburetor in diesel mode. That is in addition to locking up the carb float in diesel mode.
