As SAm said in the time non-det was all that was available. I have a C that as far as I know has had non-det all it's life with the exception of small amounts I have added in recent years since I have owned it. Search the archives and you will find posts on pulling the pan, side covers and valve cover then cleaning sludge out and switching over to detergent. Changing oil often for a while as well. However, I have never heard of anyone hurting an engine by switching over. Nonetheless I am planning on switching over slowly with mine just to be safe.
