Jerry it doesn't matter where #1 is on the distributor.
Get #1 piston on TDC on the compression stroke. Turn on the ignition.
Turn the distributor body until the points flash, or start to open.
Turn off the ignition. Wherever that rotor is pointing will be the #1 post.
Then in a clockwise order, wire up #3, #4, #2.

I have two Ms with aftermarket Delco. #1 post is different on each one.
