Negative vs Positive ground on 12 volt conversions

I have a 1948 Model C with magneto that someone added a 12V alternator to before I got it. It seems to work fine except for the ammeter gauge, although I have noticed that the ground is still positive. The diagrams I found in the archives indicate that it should have been converted to a negative ground. Can someone help me with this? The ammeter gauge never indicates anything.
