John - Probably the simplest approach is to install an oil pressure switch on the engine, then use that to open/close the alternator control circuit. That way your alternator control will be fully automatic. It will also completely independent of the existing magneto control wiring. Be sure to use a switch with NORMALLY OPEN contacts - i.e. switch contacts close when oil pressure is sensed! (This is opposite the usual car oil pressure switch which open their contacts when pressure is sensed.) Some 80's era GM (and Chrysler?) cars used oil pressure switches containing two sets of contacts - one each normally open and normally closed. One of those switches would work fine.
