Mark - Unless someone reworked the alternator, it is for negative ground only. Look for the stamping on the body near the tensioning bracket ear. It will list the Delco part number, voltage, amp output and ground polarity. If the alternator IS a negative ground unit and the battery has been connect positive ground, the alternator will be no good. There's internal parts that fry the instant the battery is connected with the polarity reversed!!
