oil questions

today i pulled apart a 47 h this is the fifth engine iv pulled apart that the person has run nondetergent oil in and the motor is full of sludge. any motors i have taken apart the has been running nondetergent oil in there was no sludge build up. my question is alot of the oldtimers i know say you should always run nondetergent oil in these old engines well after seeing this sludge problem i was wondering if it is safe to run a detergent oil in an older engine? in my tractors i run 15w40 in all of them is this ok? thank you have a good day
