CHECKING CHARGING

I would like to know the best way to check the output of my generator. I don't know if my ammeter is any good or not. Is there a way to check this? I have a 50 C that had been changed to 12V and I put a 6 volt generator on it from a 49 C with a cut out on it. The 50 C has a standard regulator on it (NEW). Is this a problem? I wired it according to the repair manual and polarized it like I have read on this forum. When running the battery reads 6.43 volts. It also has a 3 position light switch and the Ammeter reads right in the middle no matter what pos. this switch is in. WHat do you do to rebuild a generator? Or do you just buy a rebuilt one. Thanks in advance for the help.
